Middle Sattre (SAT-tree) is an Austin-based experimental folk band. Originating in Salt Lake City as solo project fronted by Hunter Prueger, Middle Sattre began as a way to deal with internalized homophobia and religious repression as a result of growing up within the strictures of the Mormon church. Converging in Austin with Mitch Stevens (electric guitar, banjo, piano) and S. Wallace (vocals, keyboard/sampler), the band further grew into an eight person ensemble, including Jordan Walsh (prepared guitar, drums), Juniper Card (guitar, drums), Kai Jasmin (viola, guitar), Sophie Mathieu (cello), and James Tabata (bass).

With a background in noise music, Prueger has a penchant for inventive instrumentation. This narrative of frustration and reconciliation comes in the form of rattling acoustic guitars draped with chains, and explosions of banjo strings struck with fidget spinners. Snares and velcro get repurposed as guitar accessories. Elsewhere, instruments are time-stretched and granulated into barely recognizable forms. Altogether, it creates a sound that is textural, prismatic, at times aggressive, and often devastatingly beautiful.

Lyrically, Middle Sattre’s compositions are at once mournful and hopeful; Prueger’s soft-spoken, almost-whispery vocals have an intimacy that evokes being let in on a long-guarded secret. In both intent and narrative, the band’s work is composed of vulnerable introspections on the agonies of repression and the ecstasies of slipping loose from those bonds. Sonically, that abstract concept of breaking free from constraint carries over into the band’s unconventional use of traditional instruments. Middle Sattre is rooted in folk traditions, but is not bound by them—unshackled in both sound and story.

Extravision recently released their 2nd full length album, ‘Temporary Fountain’ - an album that falls under the umbrella of psychedelic, yet is difficult to categorize beyond that. The album was produced during the pandemic lockdown, which influenced its glitchy, scattered nature, lending a unique sound to the songs, most of which were originally intended to be folk anthems.
